Our wooden boot trees are made entirely in-house, giving us complete control over every stage of the manufacturing process. Individually crafted from premium English beech, each pair is made to the exact measurements of both your boots and your legs, ensuring a precise fit.

Beech has long been the traditional timber of choice for boot trees due to its strength, stability and durability. The timber is carefully steamed to preserve its natural colour before being kiln dried to prevent warping, creating a product designed to last for many years.

While made-to-measure boot trees represent a significant investment, they offer exceptional long-term value by protecting the shape, fit and lifespan of your boots.

Their first function is to provide a firm foundation for polishing and boning, an essential part of maintaining traditional wax calf leather boots. More importantly, they preserve the original Horace Batten shape, helping your boots retain their elegant appearance and structural integrity for decades.

Although it can be tempting to use older or ill-fitting boot trees, doing so can be a false economy. Poorly fitting trees can distort the shape of the boot, damage the welting and ultimately shorten the life of your footwear. If you already own boot trees, we are always happy to assess their suitability and, where possible, carry out alterations.

We also produce made-to-measure boot trees for boots not manufactured by Horace Batten. To create an accurate fit, we require your boots for approximately four weeks while the trees are being made.

A selection of optional enhancements is also available, including engraved brass name plaques (+£55), hollowed trees or spring-cut keys (+£30), alternative handles, black stained finishes and selected premium timber options where appropriate. Before boning your boots, it is essential to ensure they are made from wax calf leather. Boning must never be used on box calf leather, as it can damage the grain surface and permanently ruin the finish.

Boning is a traditional bootmaking technique used to compress and smooth the waxed leather after polishing. By applying gentle pressure with the polishing bone, the surface of the leather is worked to produce the deep, mirror-like finish for which traditional wax calf riding boots are renowned. When carried out correctly and regularly, boning also helps maintain the appearance of the leather for years to come.

We are happy to provide guidance on the correct boning and polishing technique, as well as advice on which polish or cream is most suitable for your boots.

Our traditional field boot laces are suitable for lace-up boots with approximately 7 to 9 eyelets. Made for a smart, secure finish, they are ideal for replacing worn or broken laces while maintaining the traditional appearance of your boots.

Our Foam Impression Box is designed to create a clear and detailed impression of your feet, helping us assess foot shape when placing a remote boot order or completing a self-measurement.

The 40mm deep foam allows the foot to press gently but firmly into the surface, leaving an accurate impression that can be used alongside your foot measurements. This helps us select the most appropriate last and better understand the shape and support required.

The foam impression box is supplied with the intention of placing an order for boots. If an order is placed with us and the foam box is returned, £15 will be deducted from your final bill.

Ideal for customers ordering remotely, the kit provides a simple and practical way to assist the fitting process from home.

Our leather garter straps, also known as top straps, are made here at our Ravensthorpe workshop from carefully selected quality leathers. They are available in a range of sizes and colours to suit your boots.

Each strap is fully lined and fitted with a silver buckle, with approximately six adjustment holes for a comfortable and secure fit. A leather keeper is also included to hold the end of the strap neatly in place during wear.

To help choose the correct size, please measure around your leg just below the knee, where the top of your boot sits. For the most accurate measurement, we recommend doing this while wearing the breeches, socks or riding attire you would usually wear with your boots.

Genuine French chalk, traditionally used to help ease the process of pulling on close-fitting riding boots.

Supplied in an easy-to-use glass jar with a handle and holed lid, the chalk can be lightly shaken into the inside of your boots before wear. This helps reduce friction, allowing the foot and leg to slide into the boot more smoothly without unnecessary pulling or strain.
